Name: Ryan Chaply

Date of Birth: 7/29/87

Home town: Allentown, PA

Any other nicknames you go by? I had a ton of nicknames growing up, though most commonly everyone (including teachers) called me by my last name from 3rd grade through high school.

---- Gaming History ----

P: Can you explain the history behind your name?

RC: I use two main gamertags, h2o Rip and Ryz0n. h2o Rip used to be just Rip, which I made when I was about 5 years old. On the Atari 2600 upon getting a high score you could enter a 3 letter tag. Most people used their initials, but I was too cool for that - so I always used Rip. The h2o got added about 6 years ago for my clan (PMS | H2O)

Ryz0n doesn't have nearly as detailed a history. I actually just randomly made the name a number of years ago when putting a nickname on my computer (because I didn't want to use my real name as a login name) and it grew on me.

P: What games are you currently playing?

RC: I've played a bunch of black ops, though since I hit 10th prestige and got a pretty good rank on the TDM leader board I haven't been playing. Bastion is an XBLA title that was absolutely amazing and I just finished that. I'll jump on league of legends from time to time, in addition to AOE as well.

P: What games are you looking forward to release?

RC: Obviously age of empires online!

I'm also very excited about Battlefield 3 (for PC) Forza 4 (x360) and Skyrim. Mass effect 3 can't come out fast enough either. There's a lot of other amazing titles though, going to be a busy fall.

P: What would have to be, in your opinion, the best video game ever?

RC: I don't really like 'best ever' titles, as many games do different things wonderfully. Pick a more narrow category and I might be able to highlight some of the outstanding titles.

P: Have you played any previous “Age of” games?

RC: I don't remember much of AOE1, but I did play plenty of AOE2 and AOM in addition to AOE3. I've played lots of other RTS games as well.

---- Microsoft Game Studios ----

P: What exactly is your job title at MGS?

RC: The job posting I was hired for was for a "forum moderator", but that's actually just a fraction of my job. The most accurate description is Age of Empires Legacy Administration

P: Are there any other things you do at work besides moderate?

RC: Lots of other things! In relation specifically to my job, I handle everything related to AOE3. This includes the forums / community, ESO server and service maintenance, website and news changes, game moderation, and all of the account support. The support emails all come to me.

P: What did you do before you worked at MGS moderating the “Age of” series?

RC: I graduated in 2009 and did some contract work with a small IT firm, a bit of consulting with game industry companies, and was directly involved with a startup that unfortunately didn't make it. During my senior year in college I had an internship at Intel in portland. Also, over the last 6 years I've been doing community management and administrative work with PMS | H2O clans... which is what initially really got me involved in the game industry.

P:How did you become a community manager/moderator?

RC: The same way most folks get hired, I applied to the job posting, was interviewed, and offered the position :P

P: Had you always wanted to be a moderator or did you have other dreams?

RC: Sometimes I dream that i'm flying...oh wait, you don't mean those dreams.

I think we all would love to experience different types of jobs in our lives, but I do enjoy interacting with the communities and really like the industry I'm in. I think it would have been fun for the entrepreneurial side to have worked out, but people at MGS are awesome and the location is excellent.

P: What do you like the most about your job?

RC: Every day is different, and the people you interact with are all passionate and want to be there. Sure, on occasion the passion from community members is expressed in the form of frustration or anger but clearly they still care about what you're doing. There's sparks of insane humor and little quirks that make it all worth it. The job is never boring, and I can make a difference to people.

P: What do you like the least about your job?

RC: It really sucks that you can't please everyone, and nothing you do will be perfect. Some people are hellbent on trying to get a reaction out of you by being irritating, rude, offensive, etc. This is a job that requires both thick skin and compassion. Thankfully most people have realized they won't be able to get under my skin. I also have put the agecomm forum software in the 'dislike' checkbox, I've been using vbulletin for most of my community management history, and miss many of my custom addons :-[

P: Who is your favourite member of the community?

RC: I'm not paid to have favorites :P

P: What is your opinion of RTS Sanctuary?

RC: Every community that's existed for a long time does so because it provides an important purpose for its members. Most of my time is spent over on agecomm, but I'm very glad to see the continuation of RTSS and understand it provides some valuable resources to players - both new and experienced. The community is a huge part of our games, and while a development studio and publisher can make a cool game, it takes a good community to make playing that game a terrific experience.

---- Age of Empires----

P: What is your opinion of the community?

RC: Age3 has some of the most dedicated people to any game. They're passionate about the game, entertaining, and sometimes a handful. But there is an amazing character within the community, and something you need to experience to understand.

P: What is your favourite game in the series?

RC: AOE3 was probably my favorite, but AOM I really liked too.

P: What is your favourite strategy across the series?

RC: I've always been more of a single player / comp stomp person. Thus, turtling would be my style.

P: What do you like about Age of Empires Online?

RC: Overall the game is a lot of fun, I like the complexity of the game how it is not just mission after mission, but you have all the stuff to do in your home city as well. Its a nice variety and makes the game a blast.

P: What don’t you like about Age of Empires online?

RC: I am a big fan of heavily story driven games, I'd rave about bastion for pages. The structure of AOEO is less directed, and while the quest lines are fun vignettes, it doesn't have the depth of story that a game designed around a campaign might.

P: MGS is being very secretive about many current and future features of the game. Why is that?

RC: We have been quiet about current features in the past since they were rapidly improving throughout the duration of the beta. Much of the feedback received from beta users was taken into account by our game designers to make the game better. Upon release you'll notice some great things since beta-timeframe, things like showing the number of gatherers on each resource. Its a careful balance of not overpromising or underdelivering - and the game will continue to evolve over time. What I can say is that we do continue to introduce or adjust feature to make the game better, and many of those changes are based on the community's expression.

P: Can we possibly have any more new information about the game?

RC: We do release quite a bit of information regularly, recently we announced a couple new civs and the skirmish hall. With launch right around the corner, obviously you'll see a lot of new stuff since the beta when you start playing.

----- Random Questions ----

P: What kind of car do you have?

RC: 1998 Volvo S70. Not terribly exciting, but its a good car with nearly 150,000 miles on it and going strong.

P: What kind of computer do you have?

RC: I've got several machines at my apt including a HP netbook (that's seen better days). I also have a phenom 2 quad core desktop which is hooked up to my TV as a HTPC. Finally I've got a quad core toshiba X305 gaming laptop that I won at CES a number of years ago with a custom mirrors edge lid.

P: What’s the first and last things you do before getting in or out of you bed in the morning and night?

RC: Generally it would involve my feet leaving or being put on the carpet.

Cat or Dog? Both- pets are awesome. I don't have any though :(

Pepsi or Coke? Coke

RTS Sanctuary or Heavengames? Both

Hottest Woman? I have to just pick one? Really? No fair....too many ... uh... summer glau I suppose if I have to pick.

Hottest Man? N/A

---- Word Association ----

P: Please answer with the first word that comes to mind. (might be a few words)

Stracraft - Korea
Age of Empires 3 - Agecomm
Age of Empires Online - My office
RTS - Real Time Strategy
AgeComm - Insanity
Pro - all the tourneys i've been to over the years
Noob - trolls calling everyone noobs

RTS Sanctuary - Community-at-large

P: Is there anything else that you want the community to know about you?

RC: I won't always be able to do what every community member wants. Simply, I can't please everybody every day, but my decision making process is not completely random.

P: Thank you for your time.

This interview was conducted by Prawny. Thank you for taking the time to interview Ryz0n
