I am not at merc levels yet, and I like to do this (100% wins so far). All vills on food, up. Uhlans for first shipment, landsknechts for 2nd, 600 gold or food for 3rd. Raid with the Uhlans, defend from raids with the knechts, vills gather res for 3rd age. Go up and spam 100% falconets. |

towers are a better defense option than 4 landsknetchs. they are meant to attack not defend. -------------------- |

I'm starting Germans and the only time I've lost so far are from lvl 60+ Players who made a new civ. I usually go 11 villies on food, 2 wood, and 3 wagons on gold by the time I hit advance. I go 500 food but the only time I would go 500 wood probably is on Indian rush maps... Or against French. (I don't have 500 wood option though; but used it as French) I advance, build market and get a few markets, get 700 Gold + 5 Uhlans to give a small rush/army to help keep me somewhat safe/explore for treasure lol. After that I go advance for the 2 mercs and boat if on water; otherwise 4 Dopps, then I hit my barracks and spam Pikes/Skirm combo. I normally take a Jaeger merc first because they're the best imo for countering about anything so far. Build Falconets too; they really slim an army down. Germ vs. Germ is a pain though, so whenever you attack with an army, try to keep your men spreaded, like put your horses behind trees for ambushing (or Jaegers) and when the armies collaide, send horses to take out artillery. Works well. Don't forget upgrades though *grin*. Don't use Mercs for defense... Unless you're building up an army, use Towers upgraded to tier 2 or 3. They should hold well. -------------------- ![]() Thanks to Rogue!!! ![]() |

Actually, using Landsknechts to defend against a rush isn't REALLY that bad of an idea against Ottomans. I ship Lands as my second shipment, and 5 Uhlans as my third. I always do that whenever I play an Ottoman and it almost always works, unless I get slowed up for some reason. I pwn their incoming Jannissaries, and a few times my opponent was so surprised that they actually just quit after their initial wave was obliterated. Not necassarily a good tactic against other civs, though. Like someone mentioned, Lands really ARE meant to attack, not defend. |
