How many times has the following happened to you?

Your small raiding force has just defeated the defenders placed around the <random building>. They are close to the structure and start attacking it, as it is the enemy's holding. Some time later, more defenders arrive on the scene, and begin to kill your party. If you do not catch it in time, your troops are dead, as they obviously hate that 2500 hp barracks more than the 5 muskets that just popped out of it.

If someone was trying to kill you, wouldn't you try to kill them right back?

The most unrealistic thing about any combat/strategy/war game is when a unit it TOO DISTRACTED to defend its own life. I call Bullsh1t. I don't care what that farm called my xbows' moms. They will defend their own lives and kill it later, especially since they starting attacking it automatically in the first place.

I'm sure some of you will just say, that's what micro is for. But no, micro is the workaround. Micro is just the all ecompasing low level command system that does what better commands should do. Since this is supposed to be a strategy game, strategy should have high importance. I'm not suggesting they take out the ability to micro manage units. I think proper attention and on the spot decisions should be able to turn the tide of battle. But microed units shouldn't hands down kill everything that is not.

Think of it this way. When you fire and fall back, fire and fall back, with your skirmishers, do you think you'd need to be there every time? Don't you think your SKIRMISHERS could understand the command 'harrass the enemy, inflict losses and give up ground,' or do you think you'd have to say 'Ok now fire! Ok, now fall back! Stop! Time to shoot again! Quick run now! Turn and shoot! Run some more! Shoot ! Run! Shoot!' Because that's what it takes now... mad.gif

If they implemented that feature it would totally kill the game. A good game is where you're under control, you control your units and they dont go doing things on their own. If you're too slow to see his army attacking yours, well, keep a better eye on the minimap.

this would also rape focus firing- according to this all your units would just attack the unit attacking them and get raped, = the best melee units would dominate.

also i think fall back + shoot is perfect as it is- the point is you should be gaining something from babysitting your units, not have them do stuff on their own, because how would one person outplay the other then?

if you control group your units is pretty easy to flick back and forth between 2-3 groups of cav, your eco, and not let anything screw up unless your being lazy- atm the game reacts pretty well to how much effort you put in and cutting back on that would only create more whining as people stop understanding why they lose.

^^^ thus your units shouldn't auto-fire on the building as well. total control > computer thinking for you

i would prefer my units doing something if i happen to leave them idle, but yeah, not at the expense at getting penetrated on the sly by minute men or something :/

that said, its not like auto-anything is exactly stopping you from having total control over your units anyway. keeping them moving is probably better for you in the long run than having someone patch your preffered playstyle to make you better, and lets face it, 2 hits to a pikeman from a hussar isnt really changing an awful lot, he's still going down :/

iirc in aok/aoc, if an enemy unit/vill popped out of a building that ur units were attacking they would stop targetting the building and attack the unit. seemed to be that units were higher in priority than buildings, and if higher priority targets came along the units focused on them regardless of what they were just doing.

could b wrong, its been a while since ive played aoc. can anyone who has played aoc more recently comment on this?
