It would be hard not to have heard about it ... StarCraft II has started to go live around the world. The Southeast Asian and Asian servers had the privilige of going live first about 12 hours ago and the European server has now gone live as well. Players using the North American Server still have a bit longer to wait but they can console themselves by watching Day[9]'s Countdown which is being streamed live around the world.
It will be interesting to see how the initial sales go - there has certainly been a lot of hype leading up to this day (and a lot of delays as well since the initial announcement of the game so many years ago). Until now the people playing the game would probably fall into the category of 'enthusiasts' but now we will start to see a much broader audience giving the game a go.

The second phase of the StarCraft II Beta is kicking into action ... thousand of players around the world have rushed to download the latest patch and are now staring vainly at their screens trying to login only to be told that the servers are down for maintenance.
The launch of StarCraft II is less than 3 weeks away (it is released on July 27th with many stores opening at midnight to get the first sales in. To help you keep abreast of what is happening with StarCraft II while you are still playing your current game we have set the StarCraft II forums to be visible on all portals. This means the posts will show up in your Latest Posts view on the portal home page and you will see all the forums when you browse that section but it won't affect the News or Replays shown on your portal page.
We'll probably leave it like this until a few weeks after the offical release so you can share the excitement with all the Terran, Protoss and Zerg fans as they get back into killing each other

Game Casting, in the form of either live casts or commentated videos for on demand watching (VODs), is becoming increasingly popular in the RTS arena (particularly for new games such as StarCraft II). A while ago I introduced some simple custom BB codes that enabled members to embed videos and game streams inside forum posts but this was only a temporary measure while I developed something more detailed for the site.
Today I am launching the first generation of the RTS-Sanctuary Caster Database System. This system lets any member add details of a game caster in a similar way to how replays are currently added. A caster can be anyone who streams coverage of games and/or provides commentated VODs of games - they only need to provide one of these services to be able to be added and the system is designed to also handle caster who provide both services. In cases where casters provide both services they may have a separate service for streaming and VODs (as someone like Day[9] does) or use the same service for both. This first generation of the system supports streams from Livestream and Ustream and VOD libraries from Livestream, Ustream, Youtube and Blip.TV.
A separate Caster forum will be established in a game category and the process of adding a caster begins by clicking the 'New Caster' button that will be visible when viewing the forum index or any topic in the forum. This brings up a simple form where you can add details of: - the live stream service used by the caster - the video service used to store the caster's VODs - the level of game the caster usually streams and/or commentates - the caster's primary language - a description of the caster's offerings
Once submitted the Caster Database System will create a new forum topic for the caster and will add all of the caster's VOD's to the site's video database. Viewing the caster's topic will display embedded viewers (as appropriate) for: - the caster's stream - the stream chat channel - a VOD viewer - the caster's VOD library The VOD viewer will let you watch any of the caster's VODs without leaving the topic to view another page in the site.
The system regularly checks the online status of all casters with a stream service and this status is shown in the master list of Casters found by selecting 'View Casters' under Casters in the menu bar. In addition a list of casters currently streaming is shown: - on the portal home page in a panel located in the column on the right side of the page below the Advertisement - in the list of topics in the relevant forum index view - in the left hand column below the topic starter details when veiwing any caster topic
Finally, the system will regularly check the VOD libraries of the casters and automatically add any new VODs into the site's video database. These will be shown in the Recent User Content panel on the portal home page and a full list of all VODs in the video database can be seen bl selecting 'View Videos' under Casters in the menu bar.
As with everything new on the site, if you find any bugs or have any suggestions for improvements to the system please let me know.
edit: The caster database forum has only been set up in the SC2 portal at the moment. It can be enabled in any other portal if there is demand for it.

We've just finished upgrading the calendar system on the site to make it easier to track events that may be of interest to the community. Events can now be set to show on individual game portals and a starting time can also be added that will automatically be converted to your local time when you are viewing the calendar so you won't get events appearing on the wrong day for you. The mini-calendar display for the current month and a summary of the coming events will be displayed in the left-column of each of the game portals. If you hover over an entry in the Coming Events list you will see the starting time (if one is set) and a summary of the event. Clicking on the link will take you to the event entry in the calendar.
Over the next few days we will set up pinned topics where you can request a staff member to add an event to the calendar or you can send them a PM with the relevant information. Feel free to use the system to track tournaments, event broadcasts and any other activity that may be of interest.

I've finally got some free time after the launch to add the Recent User Content Panel to the portal pages. The panel shows the most recent addition to the downloads section in detail and summary details of other additions to the Downloads and Guides section within the last 14 days. As you may have noticed we are trying to focus a bit more on collecting content for the user community so hopefully this will help additions get noticed more.
Remember, anyone can add items to the downloads system although some categories (mods, patches and utilities) will require staff release before the file is available to users to download.
You will find the panel on the right-hand side of the game portal displays above the Site Statistics and Users Online Panels - it is not displayed on the RTS-Sanctuary portal page.

A few days ago I set up codes to let you embed a video from YouTube but until now we haven't been able to embed a YouTube Channel such as http://www.youtube.com/user/DrewN3O.
Well now we have three ways that such channels can be embedded - one that anyone can use and two that need the channel owner to do some setting up.
Read how in the post below

I prefer to err on the side of caution so I am issuing a general warning about account security.
Last week a hacker gained access to the server through the AgeSanctuary web site. I discovered evidence of the breach yesterday and spent most of the day going through server logs trying to work out what had been done. While nothing malicious was done to the web site I am certain that the hacker downloaded at least the member information tables from both the agesanctuary database and the rts-sanctuary database. These tables contain your username, email address and encrypted passwords among other things.
Passwords are stored in the database using an MD5 encryption which is a one-way encryption system (ie once encrypted you can't go back to the original entry) so your passwords should be safe. The only way to crack an MD5 password is to generate MD5 hashes for every possible password combination and compare them to the stored string - if your password contained just seven characters the possible variations to test are in excess of 900 million. However, when it comes to hackers, I never believe in leaving anything to chance and it is possible that a brute force approach could somehow crack encrypted passwords.
Therefore, if the password that you use for this site is something that you use for anything else that is important to you, I would suggest that you change your password.
I apologise for any inconvenience but I felt it was better to let you know even if the risk is small. I take the security of the site seriously and I have identified and patched the vulnerability that was used to hack onto the server. Unfortunately when you have 10's of thousands of lines of code you don't always see every possible vulnerability.
